Eagles rookie QB's disastrous preseason performance couldn't have come at a worse time

Eagles rookie QB's disastrous preseason performance couldn't have come at a worse time

Eagles backup quarterback Tanner McKee might not be ready to play in Philadelphia's Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

McKee suffered a right finger injury this past week and was held out of two consecutive practices. He didn't need surgery, but no timetable has been given for his return.

During the Eagles' preseason game against the New York Jets on Friday, McKee kept his right hand in his pocket. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni was noncommittal about McKee's status after the game.

"We'll see," Sirianni said. "You guys know he's dealing with a finger. He's working to get back. We'll see where he is."

The Eagles should be concerned about the backup QB position if McKee's out for a long period. The offense couldn't function if Jalen Hurts got hurt and McKee wasn't available.

Sixth-round rookie Kyle McCord had a rough performance against New York's defense. He only completed 15 of his 35 passes (42% completion percentage) and was picked off by Jets safety Malachi Moore.

McCord made a poor decision. He launched the ball into double coverage over Darius Cooper's head and it fell right into Moore's hands.

Perhaps McCord could become a good backup later in his career, but he's not ready to play in an NFL game this season.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson also had a bad summer and is unlikely to make the 53-man roster.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman could add another backup QB for Week 1 and demote McCord to the practice squad. 12 days out from the opener, the Eagles need to quickly find a solution.

Perhaps McKee's recovery speeds up over the next week and he gets cleared.

But if that doesn't happen, the Eagles cannot go into Week 1 with McCord as their backup. It would be a huge mistake.
