'Peacemaker' Stars Steve Agee and Sol Rodriguez Tease a Spoiler-Heavy Season 2 Finale: "The Last Three Episodes Are So Big"

[Editor's note: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Peacemaker.]

Summary Season 2 of the HBO Max series 'Peacemaker' tosses Christopher into an alternate world where his father and brother are alive, forcing a self-reckoning. Rick Flag Sr.'s revenge divides ARGUS, forcing loyalties and betrayals among Sofia Bordeaux, John Economos, and Emilia Harcourt. John Economos leans on Leota Adebayo's calm support, and the season nudges him toward finding his inner strength.

In Season 2 of the eight-episode HBO Max series Peacemaker, Christopher Smith (John Cena) discovers an alternate world where his father (Robert Patrick) and brother (David Denman) are alive and superheroes, forcing him to face his past and re-evaluate his own reality. At the same time, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), the new acting director of ARGUS, has a need for vengeance when it comes to Peacemaker being responsible for the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), putting Sofia Bordeaux (Sol Rodriguez), John Economos (Steve Agee), and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) in a position to betray one side or the other.

During this interview with Collider, co-stars Agee and Rodriguez discussed the relationship between their characters, how Agee roots for his character to find his inner strength, the friendship Economos has with Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), the advice he got from Nick Offerman that helped him play drunk, what Bordeaux thinks of Rick Flag Sr., and how fans will react to the season finale.

'Peacemaker's John Economos Has an Issue With the Fact Sofia Bordeaux Is an Authority Figure "She represents everything that he despises."

Collider: How would you describe the relationship between your characters this season? What do they think of each other?

STEVE AGEE: She's an authority figure, and we know that, in the past, hasn't flown well with Economos. He's had a series of horrible people. Amanda Waller was a horrible person. [Sasha Bordeaux] is not a horrible person, it turns out, but she's an authority figure. She represents everything that he despises.

SOL RODRIGUEZ: And she's making him do things against his friends that, obviously, he doesn't want to do and it upsets him. So, he hates her.

AGEE: She's a professional, and he's an absolute idiot.

I feel like John Economos just doesn't like people that are mean.

AGEE: No. He's a broken guy. He responds well to positivity.

Steve, there's a moment in episode two when Adebayo asks Economos if he's just going to sit around and be scared his whole life, and he says, "Yes." Do you root for your character to find his inner strength and take more risks?

AGEE: I do root for it. When I get the scripts, I can't wait to see what James [Gunn] does with the character because he is very similar to myself. I'm not one to take chances. I'm a totally different person than I was in my 20s. I was a rock-climbing instructor in my 20s. I was a mountaineer and outdoorsman. I would spend months living out of my truck in the desert, rock climbing. And now that I'm a little closer to the end than I am to the beginning, I'm so aware of my mortality that I'm a lot more hesitant to do adventurous stuff. I'm a lot more comfortable sitting at home watching movies. The thought of going out and doing shit like traveling is awesome to me, but terrifying. I see myself in John Economos, so I'm definitely rooting for him to do more.

Steve Agee Got Advice From Nick Offerman Before His Drunk Scene in 'Peacemaker' Season 2 "It's really difficult to do."

I actually love the moments that John has with Adebayo. What do you love most about that relationship and the time you got to spend together this season? It feels like she gets him in a way that doesn't make him too uncomfortable.

AGEE: She's a very calming voice of reason in this world, for myself and the others. I've grown really close to Danielle [Brooks] in the past four years or so that we've been working together. We didn't have a ton of scenes together, but the ones we did were really meaningful. There's a scene we have in a hotel room that's really endearing. And there's a scene of us drunk together that I really loved shooting. Both of us were really afraid to play a drunk character because it's really difficult to do. I'd never done it. She'd never done it either. I was talking to Nick Offerman, who has done it many times, and the advice he gave me was, "To play drunk, you have to pretend to be a person trying to pretend to be sober. You have to act like you're trying to repress it." It was weird to hear, but also once we started working, it made perfect sense.

Sol, your character seems impressed by Rick Flag. What does she think of him? What would she like to see happen there?

RODRIGUEZ: I think she idolizes him a lot and she respects him. Obviously, she's worked really hard to be where she is and one day, she would like to be the leader, as he is now, as a woman. Throughout the season, you'll see that she gets a little maybe disappointed in some choices that Rick Flag is making. She realizes his agenda is revenge for his son. The work that we're doing at ARGUS has nothing to do with his personal agenda. When she starts seeing that he's working towards his own interests and not the interests of the country which she works hard for, so she has a tough choice there. We'll see what happens.

Steve Agee and Sol Rodriguez Are Afraid to Spoil the 'Peacemaker' Season 2 Finale "My hands are sweating."

What do you think people will say after they see the last episode of this season? How do you think fans will react to the season finale?

RODRIGUEZ: That episode is so big.

AGEE: The last three episodes are so big. There's a lot going on. I'm afraid to mention anything from the episodes because they're so spoiler heavy. My hands are sweating, just treading this ground right now. I don't know what to say.

RODRIGUEZ: It's really hard.

AGEE: James directed two of the last three episodes, so they're really big.
