The world of Star Wars is changing as Lucasfilm prepares to bring George Lucas' space saga back to theaters in 2026 for the first time in seven years with The Mandalorian & Grogu, followed by Shawn Levy's collaboration with Ryan Gosling on Starfighter in 2027. However, a new rumor has suggested that a movie believed to be dead and buried could be making a surprising comeback.
While there have been several rumored Star Wars movie projects to have come and gone from the likes of Taika Waititi, Rian Johnson, and Patty Jenkins, it seems that the latter of these may be making an unexpected return - again - to the line-up of future Star Wars movies.
For those who don't remember, it has been five years since Wonder Woman director Jenkins was announced to be directing Rogue Squadron, a movie that would bring Star Wars back into cinemas in December 2023. Naturally, the Covid pandemic caused several delays before the movie was stripped from Disney's release schedule in 2022 and the project was reported to be dead.
In 2024, Jenkins made a surprising comment that she was once again working on her Star Wars project while speaking with Collider, but since then there has been no further word, and Rogue Squadron has not figured in any recent interviews by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. However, according to insider Daniel Richtman, Rogue Squadron is indeed now back on the cards, while another unnamed Star Wars movie has also gone into development, but there are conveniently no further details available on either project.
What Is Happening With 'Star Wars'?
In 1977, the Star Wars franchise was a very simple tale about a small bit of family drama playing out against the backdrop of space. George Lucas delivered three movies in relatively quick succession that changed the face of sci-fi fantasy forever. Two decades later, three prequel movies continued to expand the Skywalker story, and almost two decades after that, Lucas' nine-movie story was complete - even if it probably didn't quite pan out as it would have if he had made all the movies himself.
For that reason, Star Wars fans should really be used to having a long wait between movies, as even with films like Rogue One and Solo thrown into the mix, Star Wars movies have never been released in quick succession when not part of a trilogy. Since The Rise of Skywalker was released in 2019, the Star Wars franchise has been exclusively releasing content on Disney+, with shows such as The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Andor becoming the new face of the franchise.
Now, Kennedy is desperate to get Star Wars back in cinemas and keep it there, but that is proving to be a little trickier than originally expected, with most directors attached to movies dropping out to stalling in the development stage. The Mandalorian & Grogu is already in the can, and will definitely be hitting theaters next year, and Levy's Starfighter appears to be on track too. However, other films such as James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi movie have seemingly stalled, Daisy Ridley's return as Rey Skywalker in a New Jedi Order movie has been delayed, and a project by Simon Kinberg has been added to the list of possible future Star Wars movies.
Is Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron finally going to take flight? Or is it possible that we will still be going around in the same circles in another five years? Anything is possible, so while fans of Jenkins can hope that this time around Rogue Squadron can make it to the finish line, it is probably best not to hold your breath just yet.
