A vacant home that stood on the waterfront near the the Hillsborough Bridge in Stratford, P.E.I., has been demolished.
The province had previously said the property at 9 Horton Dr. was owned by a numbered company that dissolved in October 2023.
Officials with the Town of Stratford said RCMP had been monitoring the property after receiving multiple calls about people squatting in the building.
After receiving a complaint in March 2024, police discovered four people living inside the home. Officers told them to leave and not return, with town officials citing safety concerns related to the vacant home.
"We've had some concerns over the last couple years since [post-tropical storm] Fiona around the state of the property -- you know, trees on the roof and just generally unoccupied. So we always feared that there may be some chance for folks to move in there," Coun. Jody Jackson, chair of Stratford's safety services committee, said at the time.
Town officials said they asked the property owners to secure the home, but recently issued a permit that allowed it to be demolished.
