As we enter spooky season and with Halloween approaching, we have explored some ghostly stories from Weymouth.
The seaside town is drenched in blood and history from the Vikings to the plague and civil war yet these stories, taken from Alex Woodward's book Haunted Weymouth, may shed some light on some previously unearthed ghoulish tales.
According to reports, there have been regular sightings from those walking in the area of two men duelling with swords in the Nothe Gardens during the half light of early mornings.
The men are described as wearing clothes similar to those found in the Regency period. It is said that the pair do not interact with anyone but simply engage in swordplay before fading from view.
It is believed that the gardens sit on the site of the town's gibbet and saw the execution of several of the Civil War Crabchurch Conspirators.
Steeped in history in a part of town considered to be the oldest in Weymouth, it is believed that George V spent many nights at the public house.
For many years those going to the pub next door have reported seeing an apparition of a ghostly woman in the ladies' toilet and whilst no one is certain who she is as no reports of female deaths have been reported in that side of the property, it's believed she has a connection to the building- often seen momentarily smiling behind the customer when they're washing their hands. Creepy.
One home along the residential road was reported to be the former home of George Joseph Smith, the 'Brides in the Bath' murderer, convicted and subsequently hanged for the murders of three women in 1915.
It was reported that he visited the property with his fiancé Bessie Mundy in August 1910.
Following this, a married couple moved to the home around 20 years later and both reported to begin feeling increasingly depressed, with no known reason, claiming life was being sucked out of them.
One night whilst brushing her teeth, it is reported that the wife saw the ghostly face of a dark-haired woman prompting a scream.
In days following, the ghostly face was also seen looking through the house from the outside of a rear window to the property.
The couple made a move to Wyke Regis and found their depression and exhaustion lifting almost immediately.
