A 36-year-old man died Sunday after suffering a medical emergency while incarcerated at the Riverside County jail in Murrieta, the sheriff's department said.

Daryl Flood of Menifee was found by deputies in medical distress inside a booking area cell at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center around 3:22 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, according to a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Correctional staff and jail medical personnel provided emergency medical assistance until paramedics arrived.

He was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where his condition continued to decline, Correctional Sgt. Christopher Wedel said in a press release. Hospital staff performed life-saving measures, but Flood did not improve and was ultimately pronounced dead.

Flood had been in custody since Saturday, Aug. 16, accused of violating post-release community supervision and a misdemeanor charge of drug possession, according to jail records.

The sheriff's department reported that it was still investigating the death.
