USP and Université Sorbonne Nouvelle sign academic cooperation agreement

Among the main fields of knowledge to be prioritized in the partnership are linguistics, cinema, artificial intelligence, and the social sciences

On Monday afternoon, September 8, officials from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle visited USP, where they were welcomed by President Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior.

During the meeting, Carlotti and the President of Sorbonne Nouvelle, Daniel Mouchard-Zay, signed an international academic cooperation agreement, with the goal of promoting a partnership in conducting research and other academic and cultural activities. The document outlines the exchange of faculty and researchers, the joint development of research projects, the organization of scientific and cultural events, the exchange of academic information and publications, and the implementation of shared courses and disciplines.

Among the main areas of interest for collaboration are linguistics, cinema, native languages, artificial intelligence, and social sciences.

Carlotti highlighted the presence at USP of several French research institutions, including the Pasteur Institute, the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL), and the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRAe). "USP is a very large university, with about 90,000 students, and it's impossible to send them all on exchange programs to France. That's why we're bringing a bit of France to USP," he said.

The President of Sorbonne Nouvelle, Daniel Mouchard-Zay, stated that "the presence of these French centers and the prospect of having a physical space at USP make us very enthusiastic and will strengthen our cooperation".

Accompanying President Mouchard-Zay were the Vice-President for Research at Sorbonne Nouvelle, Capucine Boidin, who is also a specialist in Tupi-Guarani; the Vice-President for International Relations, Françoise Lavocat; the director of the International Research Center Worlds in Transitions, from CNRS-USP, François-Michel Le Tourneau; and the scientific attaché of the consulate, Marion Magnan.

Also present at the meeting were the USP Vice-President for Graduate Studies, Rodrigo Calado; the director of the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Eduardo Góes Neves; and the deputy director of Academic Reception at the USP Agency for National and International Academic Cooperation (Aucani), Larissa Driemeier.

Université Sorbonne Nouvelle is one of the 13 universities that emerged from the University of Paris in 1970. Focused on the humanities, Sorbonne Nouvelle has departments of literature, linguistics, modern languages, arts, social communication, European and Latin American studies.
