Felon banned from Lummi Nation after officer shooting

The convicted felon accused of shooting a Lummi Nation police officer is no longer allowed on tribal property.

Jesus Penuelas-Agramon, charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting the officer multiple times, is banned from all tribal lands, according to KIRO 7. If he is found on tribal property, he could be arrested.

Penuelas-Agramon, 26, was arrested in Ferndale on July 28, about 12 hours after the shooting, according to Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell Tanksley.

The Lummi Nation officer was following a Ford Ranger when it went off the road into a ditch. As he walked up to the truck to check on the driver, a man opened the door and shot the officer seven times -- in the left ankle, thigh, and knee, right leg, abdomen, and head before he escaped.

Penuelas-Agramon was later arrested and identified as a convicted felon, wanted in Colorado for unlawful possession of a firearm and drug trafficking, according to charging documents. He is known to use multiple aliases.

The officer underwent two surgeries and is on the road to recovery.

"He is currently recovering well and making great progress," the Lummi Nation Police Department wrote on Facebook Monday. "The officer and their family are incredibly grateful for the support received and continue to receive from the community."

The people of the Lummi Nation are the original inhabitants of the land and coast of Bellingham and Ferndale in Whatcom County, according to the City of Bellingham.

The Lummi Nation now resides on the north side of Bellingham Bay. They are the third-largest tribe in Washington.
