If you're looking for some night-sky dazzle, the Perseid meteor shower continues through Saturday, Aug. 23.
The Perseid shower already peaked the night of Aug. 12 into early morning Aug. 13.
"The Perseids, which peaks in mid-August, is considered the best meteor shower of the year. With swift and bright meteors, Perseids frequently leave long 'wakes' of light and color behind them as they streak through Earth's atmosphere," the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's website said. "The Perseids are one of the most plentiful showers with about 50 to 100 meteors seen per hour. They occur with warm summer nighttime weather allowing sky watchers to comfortably view them."
Will we be able to see the Perseids in the Lower Hudson Valley?
It was not immediately known how visible the Perseids will be in the Lower Hudson Valley, but there's a few clear nights in the forecast that could make for good stargazing in the near future.
Thursday, Aug. 14's forecast from the National Weather Service has mostly-clear skies with low temperatures around 69 degrees. Friday night could be cloudy and a bit foggy, but Saturday's forecast has mostly-clear skies again at night.
Optimal time to see the Perseids is between midnight and dawn, according to the American Meteor Society, USA TODAY reported. During its peak, there can be up to 50 to 75 meteors an hour in ideal conditions, according to the American Meteor Society. But this year, the showers' peak wasn't expected to meet those ideal conditions because the moon was too bright.
To better see the shower, go to a dark location away from light pollution; give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the dark; and, avoid looking at phones or bright lights.
The meteor shower began on Thursday, July 17.
