Meet Hong Kong-born MARGARET NG, who enjoyed her undergraduate exchange student experience so much, she decided to return to the U.S. for grad school at Missouri (MA '14) and Texas (Ph.D. '18).

"I have lived here ever since," says the UI associate professor of journalism, with an appointment in the Institute of Communications Research.

A member of the Illinois faculty since the fall of 2018, Ng's research examines "technology use, social media and information diffusion using tools from the field of computational social science."

The fan of crafting and DIY projects took Editor Jeff D'Alessio for a virtual tour of some of her most memorable places and spaces on and around the UI campus.

Where I was when I got great news

I spend most of my time in my office -- it is like a second home to me. I have completed it with a sofa, a dartboard and pictures of my favorite people and places. I made it feel warm and welcoming, and I am lucky that I actually enjoy going there every day.

It is also my peaceful escape from my demanding 10-year-old corgi at home.

There was always good news I discovered while working there: a paper being accepted, receiving the Emerging Scholar Award in my field and news about my tenure. I nearly spilled coffee on my keyboard from excitement -- do not worry; the keyboard survived.

I am deeply grateful for that moment and for all the colleagues and students who made it possible -- truly a blessing.

Where I'd take a newcomer I wanted to impress

I always bring visitors -- my parents, friends -- to the Siebel Center for Design, where even the walls seem to spark creativity. I love watching their eyes light up as they explore the open, airy spaces. It instantly fills my mind with inspiration and reminds me of the power of new ideas.

Where I interviewed for my first job at Illinois

Seven years ago, during a campus visit the week after Thanksgiving, my interview days doubled as a culinary tour: Silvercreek, Big Grove Tavern and Nando Milano.

I remember thinking, "If the job is half as good as the food, I am in for a treat."

Looking back, I am grateful for both the warm welcome and the extra notches on my belt.

The spot that reminds me most of home

Green Street's vibrant energy transports me back to the bustling streets of Hong Kong, where adventure and snacks await around every corner. The mix of people, languages and late-night eateries comforts me, reminding me to appreciate the journey from one dynamic city to another.

The one structure that should never be messed with

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts is timeless. May we never lose its quirky charm or the echoes of Illini history within its walls.

It teaches gratitude for the past as we build the future and recalls joyous moments: graduations, concerts and gatherings with friends.

My favorite place to teach

The Siebel Center for Design is my favorite place to teach. It feels like working in a space bursting with creativity and always full of energy. Students enter curious and leave ready to impact the world, which is every educator's dream. I am thankful daily for spaces that ignite imagination and collaboration.

My favorite place to reflect

When I need mental break, I visit the Prayer Chapel at St. John's Catholic Newman Center. It is peaceful, quiet and the sole place where my to-do list cannot find me. I am profoundly grateful for this serene sanctuary amid campus chaos.

My favorite section of any library

The Architecture Library is my haven, surrounded by design books. It is the one place where judging a book by its cover is encouraged.

My favorite place to grab a bite

Golden Harbor offers feasts reminiscent of home, but near Campustown, I gravitate toward steaming ramen or sampling every Asian dish possible. Good food unites people and evokes gratitude for friends, family and full stomachs.

My favorite non-building

The Main Quad is my favorite place to walk, especially on sunny days when squirrels are running around. Walking there before class, I enjoy the campus' beauty and lively feel.

It reminds me to appreciate the fresh air, green spaces and the chance to teach and learn here.
