STAMFORD -- The wake of a 12-year-old city boy killed in a hit-and-run last weekend is scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon.
The family of Brisley Reyes, who was killed on Aug. 2, announced the celebration of life would take place at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Stamford. The church, located at 1230 Newfield Ave., will start the service at 4 p.m. and go until 8 p.m.
Reyes was idling in the shoulder of Courtland Avenue on a mini bike when he was struck by a motorist the Saturday night he was killed, according to police. Reyes was then thrown from the bike, police said, while a family member was nearby on a scooter.
Neighbors in the area where the crash occurred ran outside to help Reyes and perform CPR until first responders arrived, police said. Reyes was taken to an area hospital but later died, despite the efforts made to save him.
A few days after Reyes was killed, his family and other members of the community came together to hold a candlelight vigil in his memory. With more than 100 people in attendance, various family members addressed the crowd.
"You're showing me the love you had for my son," Reyes' mother, Sulma Mazariegos, said to the crowd in Spanish, after losing her only son.
Several of Reyes former teachers also recalled his intelligence and kindness, saying "he had a smile that would brighten up the room."
Police said the motorist who struck Reyes, a city resident in his 40s, refused to answer any questions without an attorney present. Police did not publicly identify the man.
Brisley Noe Reyes, the boy's father, said in a speech at his son's vigil that he was the family member accompanying Reyes at the time of the crash. The older Reyes said the motorist made no attempt to stop and called for justice.
