Firm resolves tax fraud incident

Daewoo Engineering and Construction Nigeria(DECN) Limited says it has resolved the recent tax deductions incidence involving a category of its work-force in NLNG Train 7 Project site in Bonny, Rivers State.

The Firm in a statement in Port Harcourt weekend, by the community Affairs and Security Manager, Bernard Ewubare, stated that all issues involving the subject matter have been convincingly explained to those concerned and fully resolved.

Ewubare said the process was carried out with the cooperation of Officers of the State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS).

"Daewoo Engineering and Construction Nigeria Limited (DECN) hereby announces that all matters concerning tax deductions at the NLNG Train 7 Project site have been fully clarified and conclusively resolved in cooperation with the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS)." Ewubare said.

The Statement further revealed that RIRS has confirmed up-to-date, the Firms tax compliance status, while all the company's tax deductions, remittances and filings are accurate and also followed due process.

He said, "following recent misunderstandings regarding tax deductions and clearance certificates, DECN requested the RIRS to review and verify the company's overall tax compliance. During the official review process, the RIRS confirmed the following key points:

"All Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) and Tax Clearance Certificates (TCCs) issued to DECN personnel are authentic, valid, and duly issued by the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service.

"DECN's tax deductions, remittances, and filings have been accurately and transparently executed in full compliance with Nigerian tax laws.

"There are no outstanding tax liabilities, discrepancies, or irregularities associated with DECN."

Furthermore, the Firm organised a one-day workshop to train the workers on steps to verifying their tax payments, status online to avoid a repeat of the issues, as they promised to remain transparent and trustwort, to sustain the good working environment as they have always done and known for.

"To ensure continued transparency and prevent future misunderstandings, DECN also conducted a short simulation demonstrating how employees can independently verify their tax information through the RIRS online platform. This practical step further reinforced confidence among workers and stakeholders regarding the company's compliance and accountability.

"DECN extends its sincere appreciation to the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service, the Bonny Local Government Council, the Welders and Fitters Association, the media, and all stakeholders for their cooperation and support throughout this process.

"The company reaffirms that the tax matter has been completely resolved, confirming DECN's strong commitment to transparency, due process, and sound corporate governance. DECN remains dedicated to maintaining a compliant, trustworthy, and productive working environment as it continues the successful delivery of the NLNG Train 7 Project."

Recall that some Daewoo Welders and Filters in the multimillion naira project, penultimate week attempted to start what would have resulted into a major industrial crisis over the demand for tax receipts and Tax Identification Numbers (TIN), from them; but for the quick intervention of the management, the situation was brought under control.

Before calm and normalcy returned, some of the concerned worker had damaged some company aluable properties, including vehicles, and office window glass.

They accused the company of fraud for not remitting the taxes they had been deducting from them to the appropriate quarters; thereby denying them access to the documents demanded from them, threatening fire and brimstone, if the needful were not promptly done.

But DECN in an earlier statement by its Community Affair and security Manager, Mr Bernard Ewubare noted that all the taxes deducted from the workers were dully transmitted to both the State and Federal Government offices, and did no fraud whatsoever, and promised to resolve the issues as soon as possible.
