KELLOGG -- The Wildcats only needed to win a single set to clinch at least a share of the Central Idaho League title. However, they had no intention of sharing.
Freshman Gretah Angle had 12 kills, 13 assists and five aces for Kellogg in a 25-14, 21-25, 25-11, 25-18 win over the Priest River Spartans on Tuesday, securing home-court advantage in the 3A District 1-2 tournament and clinching their second straight league championship.
Unlike their previous CIL matches, this one had an added layer of drama after Kellogg dropped the second set; the first set they had lost in CIL play all season long.
"We needed this," Kellogg coach Hollie Yrjana said after the match. "We needed someone to come in and push us."
Junior Paige Yrjana had nine kills, 13 digs and four blocks, sophomore Ella Yrjana seven kills and 16 assists, junior Jordyn Stutzke 10 digs, senior Dani Henrikson three blocks for Kellogg
"It was a fabulous team effort tonight," said Yrjana. "Our tough and consistent serving (only missed three all night), gritty defense and smart offense helped us pull off the win tonight. Priest River came to play tonight, and they really made us work for the win."
It was the sixth time in the last seven years Kellogg has won or shared the league title.
ST. MARIES -- The visiting Wildcats, who clinched the Central Idaho League title on Tuesday, swept the Lumberjacks 25-7, 25-15, 25-14 in CIL play.
Dimercia Spooner had five kills and two blocks for St. Maries. Taryn Brebner had five digs, Lyssa Watkins four assists, Brooklyn Scheffelmaier nine digs.
"It was just one of those nights that we couldn't get a pass off or get to where we needed to be to cover," St. Maries coach Tammie Woster said. "Kellogg hit the open spots."
KELLOGG -- The host 3A Wildcats, fresh from winning the Central Idaho League crown earlier in the week, swept the 4A Tigers 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 at Andrews Gymnasium.
Sophomore Ella Yrjana led Kellogg with 14 assists, 13 digs, nine kills, and three aces, while teammates Paige Yrjana, Gretah Angle, Jordyn Stutzke, and Dani Henrikson all contributed across the board.
The Wildcats honored Henrikson, the program's lone senior, before the match.
"It was a great senior night for us," coach Hollie Yrjana said. "We got to honor our only senior, Dani Henrikson, and ended our regular season playing tough."
Addie Archer had 18 digs and five kills for Timberlake. Amarijana Olivieri had eight kills and nine digs, Rilynn Kaiser six blocks and two aces, Alicie Nield five blocks and two aces, Willow Mattson 11 assists.
Kellogg (22-1) is idle until the 3A District 1 tournament on Oct. 21.
WALLACE -- Senior Tylah Lambert had 10 kills, 11 digs, 24 assists and three aces as the visiting Knights beat the Miners 27-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-23 at Kirby Krulitz Court to win the Scenic Idaho Conference title, Lakeside's first league title since winning the North Star League in 2013.
Kimberly Pluff added 13 kills, and five digs for Lakeside. Rayna Schatz had nine kills, five digs and three blocks, Saydee Peone 11 kills and seven digs, Allisue Hendrickx five digs, Ambi Aldrich six kills for the Knights.
"Hats off to my seniors," second-year Lakeside coach Devyn Moore said. "They played one heck of a game again. We're lighting a fire underneath us, and we're working hard so no one gets to put it out anytime soon."
Senior Megan Hull had 16 kills and 20 digs, senior Aubrey Birdsell 20 assists, 13 digs and three aces, senior Kylee Phillips seven kills, three aces, one block and 22 digs and senior Olivia Berry four aces and 17 digs for Wallace.
POST FALLS -- Senior Kylee Phillips had eight aces, three kills and eight digs for the Miners in a 25-7, 25-12, 25-19 win over the Jaguars in a Scenic Idaho Conference match at The Courts at Real Life.
Senior Megan Hull had four aces, four kills and 10 digs, senior Anna Rehnborg five aces, junior Kayden Stutzke 10 assists and two kills and junior Khepri Wood five kills for Wallace, which hosts Clark Fork in the opening round of the 2A District 1 tournament on Wednesday.
COEUR d'ALENE -- The host Saints, in their second season as a full member of the IHSAA, completed their second straight undefeated run through the North Star League, beating the Tigers 25-11, 25-9, 25-9 at Holy Family Catholic School.
Kate Clemens had 17 assists and five aces for Coeur du Christ. Espi Klocko added five aces, Therese Junkin four blocks for the Saints.
CLARK FORK -- Sophomore quarterback Cooper Miller threw for 312 yards and accounted for seven touchdowns for the Miners in a win over the Wampus Cats in the North Star League opener for both at Clark Fork High.
Junior Henry Larson had 10 catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns and ran for one score for Wallace (6-1), which hosts Coeur du Christ at Sather Field in Silverton next Friday.
KELLOGG -- The host Wildcats trailed 32-26 after one of the more entertaining first halves in recent memory, but then the injury bug struck.
Just before half, junior quarterback Porter Lewis injured his non-throwing arm, and lineman Luke Little suffered an abdominal injury and the Wildcats couldn't hang on.
The Copperheads scored 34 unanswered points, as the defense continued to struggle, and back-up quarterback Cyrus Reed struggled to find any rhythm.
Kellogg (2-4, 1-1 CIL) will have to win out if they want a shot at the 3A playoffs, beginning this week at Grangeville on Saturday.
COEUR d'ALENE -- Coeur d'Alene junior Allie Maykuth and sophomore Raegan Greiner notched a pair of individual and relay wins in an Inland Empire League Invitational at the Kroc Center.
