INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -- A free event focusing on women's mental health is being held in Indianapolis on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Embassy Suites North, offering therapeutic strategies and support.
The event, organized by the Family and Community Partners in collaboration with Hovey Street Church of Christ, and aims to address the mental health challenges women are facing. It is also an opportunity for women to have a space for sharing and learning.
Organizers say women who attend the event will will engage in group settings where clinical issues are presented, and therapeutic approaches will be shared.
"Women have dealt with so much and kept so much inside," Kamona Coleman-Mundy said on Daybreak. She is a therapist with Family and Community Partners. "They need a safe place to actually share and hear and glean from one another and be supported in a therapeutic setting." Keisha Howard from Hovey Street Church of Christ emphasized the importance of the event, stating, "It's important because of the things that women go through with the different struggles in life and not having people to talk to."
The event will feature speakers, including Coleman-Mundy, who will provide insights and strategies for managing emotions and prioritizing self-care. The theme for the month is "prioritizing me," encouraging women to put themselves first, akin to the advice given on airplanes to put on their own oxygen masks before assisting others.
"Therapeutic setting allows you to have one-on-one discussions with somebody who is safe. It's not a family member, it's not a friend, somebody that knows and that will maybe side with you, but somebody who's going to clinically share with you some strategies and interventions to help you, whether it be anxiety, depression, anger management, you know. All these things we deal with on a day-to-day," Coleman-Mundy said.
The event is designed to be inclusive, offering child care and space to accommodate mothers who may need to bring their children. Breakfast will also be served at the event, and attendees are encouraged to come in and be part of the mental health session.
