Backlash in Shariatpur over eggs thrown at Akhter Hossen

Activists of Students Against Discrimination and National Citizen Party (NCP) in Shariatpur staged a protest, hurled eggs, and held a sit-in this evening in front of the house of Zahid Hasan, former president of the US Chhatra League, who threw eggs at NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday.

The demonstration took place around 7pm at Zahid's ancestral home in Telipara village of Chamta union, under Naria upazila in Shariatpur. Zahid Hasan is currently serving as the Science and Technology Affairs Secretary of the US Awami League.

Following the incident, police were deployed in front of his house.

District NCP coordinator Advocate Ruhul Amin, who led the protest march to Zahid's home, told The Daily Star over the phone at 10pm, "Awami League leaders have fled abroad to cover up their crimes and are now conspiring in countries like the US. By attacking NCP leaders during the UN visit, they have tarnished Bangladesh's image. As a protest, we staged a 30-minute sit-in and threw eggs at Zahid Hasan's house. We will announce our next programme tomorrow."

Imran Al Nazir, former convener of the district unit of Students Against Discrimination Movement, said, "Zahid Hasan was behind the egg attack on Akhter Hossen in the US. Out of anger, students protested at his ancestral home. Such miscreants must be socially resisted."

Additional Superintendent of Police (Naria Circle) Dr Ashiq Mahmud said police were dispatched after learning of the protest, adding that the situation is calm now.
