Sandy Hook man charged in Newtown Community Center locker room incident, police say

NEWTOWN -- A Sandy Hook man was arrested this week in connection with an incident at the Newtown Community Center earlier this year, according to police.

Adam Bryan Bowditch, 23, was charged with risk of injury to child, tampering with evidence and disorderly conduct Monday, following an investigation into a July 22 incident that reportedly occurred in a locker room area of the facility.

Community center staff "responded immediately" to the incident and a community center member promptly contacted police, according to a statement from Newtown Community Center director Matt Ariniello and Police Chief Kullgren posted on the Police Department's Facebook page July 31.

The individuals involved quickly were identified at the scene and "one party (was) banned from the facility," according to the statement.

In the wake of the incident -- details on which remained scarce as of Thursday morning -- Ariniello assured residents that the safety and well-being of community center members were top priority.

"We understand that situations of this nature can cause concern. The Community Center is committed to transparency and maintaining a safe, welcoming space for everyone," he said in the July 31 statement. "To that end, we continue to uphold our safety procedures."

Those procedures include background checks for all staff members, routine walkthroughs of the facility and active staff monitoring of key areas, as well as "screening all members against the National Sex Offender Registry prior to approval of membership," according to the statement.

Newtown police said Bowditch turned himself in on an outstanding arrest warrant Monday stemming from the July 22 incident, and was later released after posting 7 percent of a $2,500 court-set bond.

Bowditch is scheduled to be arraigned on the risk of injury, evidence-tampering and disorderly conduct charges Oct. 9 at state Superior Court in Danbury.
