Yellowstone partially reopens Madison, Firehole, Gibbon rivers to fishing

Yellowstone's fishing regulations vary depending on the species, so fishermen should know how to easily tell them apart.

Thanks to cooler nights and recent rainfall, Yellowstone National Park is reopening fishing on the Madison, Firehole and Gibbon rivers and their tributaries, but only from sunrise until 2 p.m.

The streams were closed to all fishing on July 12 due to low flows and high water temperatures that stress trout.

"Water temperatures in select rivers and streams continue to exceed 68 degrees in recent days," the Park Service noted in a news release, "and flows remain low. These conditions are lethal to trout, and the partial closure will protect the park's native and wild trout fisheries and will remain in effect until conditions improve.

"Staff will continue to monitor the water temperatures. The closure may be lifted if water temperatures adequately cool, or be reinstated if temperatures rise."

Yellowstone Lake and other lakes remain open to fishing from sunrise to sunset as specified in the 2025 fishing regulations.

All other rivers and streams not listed as closed remain open to angling.

The Park Service reminded anglers to fish during the coolest times of day and land fish quickly. Do not play hooked trout to exhaustion. Gently handle fish in the water as much as possible and let them recover before release.
