Shubman Gill had his first assignment as India's Test captain when the national team went to tour England for a successful five-match series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Now, it has been revealed that the that legend Sachin Tendulkar and Steve Smith had their fair share of background helping in this successful run.
Shubman Gill amassed a staggering amount of 754 runs in the five Tests, including 4 centuries. He came out at No. 4 instead of his usual opening position, but this change shifted a gear within him that brought out this splendid outcome.
Shubman Gill stated that he had pressure to perform well as the captain, and he went to Steve smith and Sachin Tendulkar to gain secrets and inside information on how to do well in English grounds. Gill revealed that both the legends had advised him to defend and score in the square side while in England.
"There was pressure of not doing well outside India. But I was feeling very confident in terms of my practice, mentally, and what positions I was getting into. I spoke to Sachin Sir and also took the (phone) number from Matthew Wade (who played with Gill in the IPL team) and spoke to Steve Smith. Both said the same thing: defend straight and score square," Gill told Hotstar.
Shubman Gill had a tough campaign as the captain, especially since the retirement of previous captain Rohit Sharma. However, he turned out great in all the key points, as he led the series to a 2-2 draw.
