The news: Google has struck a new deal with the Australian Associated Press (AAP) that will see the newswire's journalism help drive results surfaced in the search giant's AI app, Gemini.
The context: The deal marks the first known AI deal that Google has struck in the Australian market, and the first known agreement an Australian publisher has reached over the use of its journalism in AI applications.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
It comes on the heels of a significant leadership change at the newswire. AAP chair Gail Hambly announced in a LinkedIn post on Sunday evening that she had resigned after four years in the job. In May, Hambly announced in a memo to staff that AAP CEO Lisa Davies would depart the newswire after three years in the role.
What they said: "Google has partnered with AAP for several years on training journalists and investing in digital innovation," said Nic Hopkins, Google's head of news partnerships for Australia and New Zealand.
