Dunstable Yesteryear: Mayor's exciting adventure

It was a demonstration organised by the London Motor Omnibus Company to convince the council of the benefits of a road transport service between the two towns.

The Dunstable Borough Gazette reported that "a magnificent omnibus, one of the largest and finest yet seen on the road" had been boarded by the councillors from outside the Saracen's Head in High Street South. Cllr James Field took the photograph, reproduced here, at the start of their journey.

The councillors were doubtful that such a large vehicle could negotiate the sharp turn into Church Street, but such worries were quickly set at rest by the expertise of their driver.

He was equally adept at steering through the busy traffic and piles of hat boxes in George Street, Luton, and around the narrow road around Market Hill between Luton's Corn Exchange and the Crown Inn.

On the return journey the horses drawing a funeral cortege because restless at the sight of the motor vehicle and another horse became fearful and had to be led on a bridle past the bus, which pulled up until the animals had passed.

Overall, the councillors were very impressed by their ride, saying that there had been no vibration whatsoever. The bus had been beautifully fitted and upholstered, and had been as comfortable as sitting in an easy chair. What's more, it could be illuminated at night quite brilliantly by means of an acetylene gas installation!

Yesteryear is compiled by John Buckledee, chairman of Dunstable and District Local History Society.
