DAYTON, Ky. (WXIX) - After 90 years of playing under the Friday night lights at O.W. Davis Field, the Dayton Greendevils have played their final game at the stadium.
"This morning I woke up and I was like this is the last one ever. This is it. I love it man. Get to close it out. Makes me so happy," said Mason Fromeyer, Dayton High School Senior.
Fromeyer is a captain for the Dayton Greendevils and he says being on the field for the final game at O.W. Davis is bringing back memories from players of years' past.
"Ernie's front teeth when we were freshmen. We were playing Dixie and they knocked his teeth out. His whole shirt was covered in blood. Referee brought him over to the sideline and he pulled his mouth piece out took his teeth out, threw them against the fence and said I'm going back in," said Allen Richard Ramsey, former Dayton High School football player.
Ramsey played football with the Greendevils back in the 1960's and O.W. Davis field is actually where he met his wife, Georgia Lang Ramsey, who was a cheerleader.
"When did we go together? Since sophomore year? Junior, junior year."
One thing Allen and Georgia can agree on is the memories made under the lights at the stadium.
"The Friday night's back then were amazing. I mean standing room only," said Georgia.
The two even got married the day of the 1969 state championship game.
"It'll be 55 years coming up? "Next month. 55 years."
The Ramsey's weren't the only ones wearing their senior jackets at the last game ever at O.W. Davis Field.
"You had your bars and all that, that kind of thing. Yeah, worn back in the 70's. 1972," said Jeff Volture, former Dayton High School football player.
Volture later even became principal of Dayton High School.
"This was one of the first projects the WPA, the work program, did back in the day in the 30's and they built this one and the one in Bellevue a couple of years later. This is the oldest structure still functioning from that time," said Volture.
From 1934 to 2024, O.W. Davis Field captured the hearts of the Greendevils faithful.
"We're going to close it out with class. We're going to close it out the right way, playing Greendevil football."
A new stadium is being built the elementary and high school, according to our media partners at the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Dayton head coach Jesse Herbst says he hopes the stadium will continue to be used for youth football, soccer games, and practices.
