COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Colorado Springs Utilities said it is planning a new wastewater expansion.
They told 11 News that with so many housing developments in the eastern part of the Springs, the need is there. The planned expansion would take five years and would cost $400 million. It would be funded through bonds and customer base rates, leaving residents paying $3 each month.
According to Colorado Springs Utilities, by having residents pay now, it will reduce the chance of increased fees in the future. They told 11 News this project is crucial in order to have more than enough capacity to serve the needs of customers, both present and future.
"As we look at things, we're planning for 50-70 years of what needs to happen from a wastewater infrastructure standpoint," Tristan Gearheart, CFO of COS Utilities, said, "again, we're looking at that planning horizon to see what can come back in from a recovery standpoint."
This project was deemed the most efficient path for all customers, both cost-wise and from an infrastructure standpoint.
