Before 'Bridgerton' and 'Wicked', Jonathan Bailey Played a Heartthrob in This Underrated Cult Classic

Jonathan Bailey may have only recently become a household name, but Bridgerton was far from the first television series he was a part of. Perhaps his most acclaimed early work was in Broadchurch, the harrowing crime drama starring David Tennant. However, he also had a penchant for comedy when he starred in the first episode of Season 2 of Some Girls. While the BBC Three series may not have been the most famous British comedy, it was a highly underrated exploration of teen experiences from the perspective of four teenage girls. Before the prominence of Derry Girls, Some Girls was a comedy that showed the camaraderie between young women at some of the hardest times of their lives. The series combined amusing situations with the vastly different personalities of the girls.

Some Girls only lasted three seasons, but that was enough to include Bailey before he rose to prominence in the highly anticipated movie musical, Wicked. Appearing in one episode of the British comedy, Bailey portrayed a new counselor named Nick who was hired after a teacher was found dead on campus. The potentially dour subject matter was undercut by the new addition to the faculty. At first, it seemed that no one would get counseling because they couldn't miss class to do it, but as soon as the teen girls saw how dreamy this new faculty member was, they couldn't resist. Being a heartthrob gained Bailey attention, but his many roles in the industry have proven that there is more to his career than that.

Jonathan Bailey Is More Than Just His 'Bridgerton' Role

When Jonathan Bailey first appeared on Bridgerton, he was seemingly the rebellious older brother who was used simply as a plot device. Anthony's (Bailey) friendship with Duke Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) allowed his sister Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) to find love with the Duke, and some heartache as well. Anthony's true time to shine arose in Season 2, but it still was not an accurate representation of all of his talents. His supporting role in Broadchurch hinted at the impressive career he would continue to cultivate.

The crime drama focuses on the excruciating trauma an entire town feels after the death of a young boy. David Tennant and Olivia Colman portray the detectives on the case, while Bailey is the rookie reporter whose green instincts get him into trouble. The series was a masterclass in storytelling and had many up-and-comers, such as Jacob Anderson, who would go on to star in Game of Thrones and Interview With the Vampire.

In recent years, Bailey has continued his career with big-budget features such as Jurassic Park and intimate character studies like Showtime's Fellow Travelers. The series was a romantic drama based on the book of the same name, which followed the decades-long relationship between two men starting in the 1950s. Bailey is a versatile actor who can pull off this as well as Elphaba's (Cynthia Erivo) ostentatious love interest, Fiyero, in Wicked. It may have taken some time to reach stardom, but Bailey only has upward momentum at this point. Viewers can catch his early work in Some Girls, streaming on The Roku Channel and Pluto TV.
