Cardinals place All-Star Brendan Donovan on 10-day IL because of groin injury

MIAMI -- After playing with a short bench over the weekend against the New York Yankees while Brendan Donovan dealt with an injury, the Cardinals placed their All-Star second baseman on the 10-day injured list Monday because of a left groin strain.

Infielder Jose Fermin was recalled from Class AAA Memphis in a corresponding move.

Donovan, 28, was absent for three games against the Yankees this past weekend at Busch Stadium and was limited to appearing in one game during a three-game set against the Cubs at the start of the Cardinals' most recent homestand. He was scratched from a start vs. the Cubs on Aug. 9 because of the groin injury.

Early Monday, Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said the Cardinals were hoping Donovan could return to the lineup Tuesday if all went well Monday. Donovan said he felt some discomfort taking ground balls Monday in Miami ahead of the Cardinals' series opener vs. the Marlins.

Donovan began experiencing the discomfort in his left groin as he played through a toe injury that he's dealt with since at least June. The 28-year-old former Gold Glove winner has said the one compromised body part has led to other areas in his body compensate for a previous injury.

The IL stint is retroactive to Friday, making Donovan eligible to be activated as early as Aug. 25. Donovan said he plans to remain with the Cardinals on Monday, then fly back to St. Louis to work with team doctors through the rehab process.

This marks the second time in Donovan's career he has had to go on the injured list. Donovan, who debuted in 2022 and remained one of the Cardinals' regulars since, missed the final two months of the 2023 season because of a left elbow strain, which he tried to play through before being sidelined.
