Crews battle structure, brush fire near Aiken Regional Airport

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Crews rushed late Friday afternoon to a structure and brush fire in Aiken County.

The fire was reported just before 5:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of Wire Road.

Early reports were that a building and a field were on fire, and heavy smoke was reported.

The building was fully ablaze.

It was unknown whether anyone was inside the building.

As fire crews neared the blaze, they reported seeing it from Interstate 20.

The fire was just east of the Aiken Regional Airport - just a short distance from where an overturned travel trailer blocked eastbound I-20 earlier in the afternoon.

The proximity of the fire to the interstate apparently hindered travel once again, with a traffic speed of only 20 mph near the fire, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

It's the CSRA's second fire of the week involving a home and brush.
