The Honolulu Fire Department's Air 1 helicopter was called into action Friday to help rescue an ailing hiker from the Diamond Head Crater Trail.

HFD received a 911 call at 11:10 a.m. reporting that a man in his 30s had became ill and was unable to descend the trail on his own, according to a news release. Six fire units staffed with 18 personnel responded, with the first unit arriving on the scene at 11:17 a.m. and sending several rescuers up the trail on foot. The second unit to arrive secured a nearby landing zone to prepare for air operations.

Rescuers arrived at the hiker's location at 11:36 a.m., and after providing basic life support secured him into a rescue litter. Air 1 then safely airlifted the man to the landing zone, where his medical care was transferred to an Emergency Medical Services ambulance crew at 12:15 p.m.
