Carson Daly's first-ever "Carson Callback Card" recipient made his triumphant return to The Voice on Tuesday, which marked the third hour of Season 28 Blind Auditions. But did Ryan Mitchell fare any better with the coaches this second time around?
Of course he did! Come on, you didn't really think The Voice would introduce this first-of-its-kind twist only to set poor Ryan up for failure, did you?
To be fair, the show kept us guessing (and kept Ryan sweating) through most of his performance of Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time," a brilliant song choice for several reasons. Not only was Ryan brought back "one more time," but he was desperate for a hit from any of the coaches. See? This isn't just a music competition show -- it's poetry.
"I'm thrilled to death, because you are a great singer," Reba McEntire told Ryan after turning her chair around and becoming his coach. "Congratulations!"
Read on for a breakdown of the other lucky contestants from Night 2 of the Season 28 Blind Auditions:
Yoshihanaa (Team Snoop), "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" -- Grade: B+ | This confident songstress had the judges entranced from her first sultry notes to her powerful finish, hitting them with a deliciously raspy belt for good measure. This was a perfect way to ease us into the night.
Lucas Beltran (Team Bublé), "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" -- Grade: B- | While perfectly solid, was his performance of this Lou Rawls classic a little hokey for our taste? Sure, but both Reba and Michael Bublé saw major promise in the 19-year-old crooner, and who are we to question them?
Carolina Rodriguez (Team Niall), "Cardigan" -- Grade: B+ | This Niall Horan super fan came armed with a poster for the One Directioner to sign, but she also meant business, putting a refreshingly funky spin on an otherwise sleepy Taylor Swift tune.
Max Cooper III (Team Bublé), "Cooler Than Me" -- Grade: B+ | Seated at his keyboard, this unassuming 23-year-old grabbed the coaches' attention within seconds. There was nothing especially incredible about his range, nor did he display any jaw-dropping musicality, but there's something undeniably charming about this Kansas boy, and we're curious to hear more. He actually sounded much better in his follow-up duet of "Just Haven't Met You Yet" with his new coach.
And while he didn't make any of the coaches turn around, congratulations are also in order to Jacob Ryan Gustafson, a California firefighter who used his unsuccessful audition as a chance to propose to his longtime girlfriend on national television -- and she said yes! (Again, did you think she wouldn't? It's The Voice, not The Choice.)
OK, Voice fans, let's talk about these Blind Auditions. Who was your favorite contestant from Wednesday's episode? Would you have turned your chair around for Ryan in his callback? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.
