From recycling old paint to dropping off expired medications, Seneca County is going all-in on fall cleaning later this month.
Several community groups will team up on Saturday, October 25, for a series of public events aimed at keeping neighborhoods clean, protecting the environment, and improving public health.
The United Way of Seneca County's Substance Abuse Coalition and Opioid Overdose Task Force will hold a Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at:
Residents can drop off any unwanted, expired, or unused medications -- including pet prescriptions -- no questions asked. Free Deterra pouches will be available to safely dispose of patches and liquids. Sharps should be taken to hospitals or nursing homes in sealed containers, like detergent bottles.
Organizers stress that flushing medications or tossing them in the trash can contaminate drinking water.
The youth coalition RiSE (Resilience & Inclusion for Students Everywhere) will host a Save-A-Life Saturday at the same locations, also from 10 to 2. Community members and businesses are encouraged to check their Narcan expiration dates.
Expired Narcan will be collected and sent to states where overdose-reversal medications are harder to access.
"Expired Narcan is better than no Narcan when it comes to saving lives," the group said.
STEPS (Seneca Towns Engaging People for Solutions) will host a Day of Giving in Ovid, Romulus, Lodi, and Interlaken from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed for painting, yard work, and clean-up projects. To help, call the STEPS office at (315) 651-9919.
