The family-run garage that was in the business for decades

COMMERCIAL Road was once home to a family-run garage, known for specialising in Volvo Cars.

W. Holloway opened its doors on Commercial Road in 1948, and as of 1983, it remained one of the few left on the city centre road.

In the 1970s, the company decided to market a range of Volvos to continue its previous experience in the "prestigious car market".

This came as the Swedish manufacturer expanded into the small car market.

Bob Badham, the managing director of W. Holloway, pointed out that the results of a survey showed that a number of people who had not bought from Volvo deemed them to be too pricey, but in fact had purchased cars that cost more than the 343 model, which was then valued at £4,892.

At the time, Dennis Edwards was the oldest employee, with 34 years behind him.

Three other workers had in excess than 20 years with the firm, and more than half of the staff had more than a decade at the company.

"Caring is much more than machines, building, and computer systems.

"It is a basic business philosophy which we hope permeates every level of our organisation," Said Dr Maxmim, chief executive of Volvo Concessionaires Limited.

"We believe at Holloways that we have developed our organisation along these lines, and that we are able to offer the highest possible standard of service and courtesy to our customers in order to ensure that all members of the Volvo family are satisfied customers," Mr Badham said.

The Hereford Times' We Grew Up in Hereford Facebook group has previously stirred discussions about Holloways, with former worker, Colin Benjamin, saying: "I started there in 1972 it was Land Rover, rice trailer and just started Volvo.

"It was Holloway and sons then and the showroom was at the front on Commercial Road".

Discussing her connection, Ann Taylforth said: "We had lots of cars from them from the 1960s onwards.

"A singer Gazelle, lots of Land Rovers, Rover 2000s and then Volvos. Bob Badham who was manager/director was a friend and neighbour particularly to my dad."
