Court Rejects Lawmaker, Unification Church Leader's Habeas Corpus Petitions

A Seoul court has rejected habeas corpus petitions by Rep. Kweon Seong-dong and Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja and decided to keep them behind bars in relation to their corruption allegations.

The Seoul Central District Court issued the rulings on Wednesday, hours after concluding hearings to review the legality of their detention.

The court said that after reviewing the results of questioning and the case records, it found no grounds to accept the suspects' petitions.

Kweon of the main opposition People Power Party is accused of accepting 100 million won, or around 73-thousand U.S. dollars, from the Unification Church in 2022 in illegal political funds.

Han is accused of providing Kweon with the 100 million won and giving luxury gifts to former first lady Kim Keon-hee in exchange for favors to her church.
