ESPN links five-time Pro Bowler to Jets to fill biggest need

The Jets offense still needs another offensive weapon to maximize quarterback Justin Fields' skillset and give wide receiver Garrett Wilson some room to operate, and one analyst believes there is a player who could help fill both roles next season.

ESPN fantasy football and NFL writer Matt Bowen matched up current free agents to teams that would be the best fit for them. When it came to the Jets, Bowen suggested they sign wide receiver Amari Cooper.

"There's a need for competition in the Jets' wide receiver room opposite of No. 1 option Garrett Wilson," Bowen wrote. "With Allen Lazard and Josh Reynolds next on the depth chart, Cooper could come in and fight for work. Yes, the 30-year-old is showing signs of decline on tape, but he is still a detailed route runner who can uncover. He could be a solid target for quarterback Justin Fields on play-action concepts, getting open on deep in-breakers."

Having spent time with both the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills last season, Cooper finished with 44 catches for 547 yards and four touchdowns.

Cooper has been named to the Pro Bowl five times since entering the league in 2015 and would immediately bring a veteran presence in the locker room for Wilson and the other receivers, giving them detailed insight on running routes, getting separation and what to do in off-the-field situations.

The Jets would have enough money to sign Cooper, with Over The Cap showing the team having $25 million to spend.

The suggestion also comes at a time when the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly interested in trading for Lazard, leading to a potential reunion with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has been linked to the Steelers as a team he could play for in 2025.
