Key Saints offensive player can breathe sigh of relief after latest update on his scary injury situation originally appeared on A to Z Sports.
The New Orleans Saints got some positive news on the injury front on Tuesday, all things considered. Many feared the worst when it came to the prognosis of offensive lineman Trevor Penning. The now guard is going through a position swap and has already dealt with multiple injuries so far in his pro career. Losing valuable playing time was a huge concern.
According to reports, Penning is expected to miss just a few weeks due to a foot injury. Penning was carted off the field during New Orleans' preseason matchup against the Chargers. There was notable concern that the injury may be major, but that does not seem to be the case.

Penning has impressed coaches and teammates in his swap to guard. His powerful play style has transitioned quite well to the interior after spending the bulk of his rookie deal at offensive tackle so far.
Losing some practice reps is a tough blow for Penning, though. This is a time where getting on the field against legitimate competition is quite valuable, and he will have to watch from the sidles for a bit.
It remains to be seen if we will see Penning return to the field in the final two games in the preseason for the Saints, but that may be surprising at this point. New Orleans may choose to play it safe with him, considering the unproven nature of their depth behind him. The Saints offensive line struggled in their first preseason action, most of which was with backups in the game. That's a frustrating sign, so hopefully, Penning can return at full force sooner than later.
Regardless, this is good news for the young lineman who is still learning all of the ropes to playing guard. Surely, his time spent this offseason with veteran center Erik McCoy has helped plenty.
