PanARMENIAN.Net - Arthur Khachatryan, an MP from the opposition Hayastan faction, sharply criticized the current peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, saying that calling it "peace" after simply initialing a deal is "absurd."
"In this context, where there's no consensus on the most critical issues, to rush and initial a peace treaty and label it as peace, sorry, but that's madness," Khachatryan said, according to Panorama.am .
He stressed that the term "corridor" has not only come from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev but also from Donald Trump. "Trump was sitting right there next to him, he could have spoken up. What corridor?" he said, referencing recent talks.
Khachatryan also criticized a recent statement proposed by the ruling Civil Contract party in parliament regarding the peace process. He claimed its real goal was to show that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's international criticism of Baku is not genuine.
"It's like in the story 'The Master and the Servant', where the servant insists he's not angry. The goal is to prevent Aliyev from thinking that Pashinyan's mild protests at the UN or in PACE mean he's actually capable of telling Aliyev to back off," he said.
Addressing Pashinyan's remarks on internal party democracy, Khachatryan said they don't reflect reality, citing the atmosphere of the latest Civil Contract congress.
"We all saw what happened: applause in the style of Stalin or Brezhnev. And now they talk about party democracy?" he said. "It's obvious that the goal is to tighten control over political parties in Armenia, and ultimately to shut down the ARF."
