Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club Spreads Word About Dictionaries to Third-Graders | School Zone | Noozhawk

Members of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning recently visited third-grade classrooms at Aliso, Canalino and Summerland elementary schools to distribute 165 dictionaries.

"Every student gets their own dictionary to keep, and each classroom teacher gets six Spanish-English dictionaries to use as they think best," said Karen Glancy, the club's Dictionary Project lead.

"Our club has been doing this community educational project, which was begun by June Van Wingerden, for more than 15 years," Glancy said.

The Dictionary Project reaches every third-grade student in the Carpinteria Unified School District, many of whom have not used a dictionary before, Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning said.

The Dictionary Project is funded by sales of the club's Carpinteria Calendar. The 2026 Carpinteria Calendar goes on sale Oct. 1 and will be available at the club's booth at the California Avocado Festival from Oct. 3-5.
