Online rumors claimed that NPR's popular Tiny Desk concert series would be canceled following the shutdown of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The speculation grew after former President Donald Trump signed an executive order that cut federal funding for NPR and PBS.
Here's what we know so far about the future of Tiny Desk.
Is Tiny Desk getting canceled?
No, NPR's Tiny Desk concert series is not shutting down.
In response to widespread rumors, Tiny Desk producer and host Bobby Carter wrote on Instagram, "I've heard from many friends, family, and audience members who are worried that NPR/Tiny Desk is shutting down. It is not." NPR has confirmed the show remains operational.
The Trump administration issued an executive order on May 1, 2025, that cut all federal funding to NPR and PBS by dismantling the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Congress followed by rescinding over $1.1 billion in funds, which effectively shut down the CPB. NPR, however, receives only about 2% of its funding from the CPB. Tiny Desk operates primarily through sponsorships and listener donations.
Congress created the CPB in 1967 as a private nonprofit to oversee federal investment in public broadcasting. The organization became the largest single source of funding for public radio and television in the U.S., distributing over 70% of its funds to approximately 1,500 locally owned public stations, many in rural areas. Officials expect the CPB to shut down fully by September 2025. NPR has challenged both the executive order and the Congressional rescission by filing a lawsuit.
NPR has continued to expand the Tiny Desk brand despite the CPB's closure. In 2025, it launched Tiny Desk Radio, a weekly program hosted by Bobby Carter and Anamarie Sayre. The annual Tiny Desk Contest also remained active, attracting over 7,000 entries and naming rapper Ruby Ibarra as this year's winner. Her NPR-supported tour is now in progress.
Since Bob Boilen launched Tiny Desk in 2008, the show has featured more than 1,200 performances. NPR continues to release new sessions through its platforms and YouTube. No official information indicates that Tiny Desk faces cancellation.
