MELAKA: A 48-year-old Egyptian was remanded for four days by the Magistrate's Court in Ayer Keroh for allegedly assaulting, strangling and threatening to kill his Malaysian wife, who is believed to be a member of royalty.
Magistrate N. Sivashangari issued the remand order to assist investigations under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 18A of the Domestic Violence Act 1994.
According to a reliable source, the incident occurred at about 10am on Saturday at a hotel in Banda Hilir when the 57-year-old victim found a cigarette box believed to belong to her husband.
The box, found beneath a pillow, had a glass tube, dried leaves believed to be cannabis and substance believed to be methamphetamine.
The source said when the man realised the items were missing, an argument ensued, making him turn violent.
The source said the man later found the substances inside the victim's handbag.
Another quarrel broke out, during which the man slapped and punched the woman several times, threatening to kill her too.
The victim, who sustained injuries to her face, neck, abdomen and arms, sought treatment at Hospital Melaka before lodging a report at the Banda Hilir police station on Saturday.
Following this, the man was detained and his urine tested positive for cannabis.
The couple are said to have been married for 10 years.
