Controversial Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is being mocked again on social media with a recent tweet claiming "gender ideology" is "homophobic," accompanied by a strange, seemingly AI-generated video. Although Rowling has been a vocal opponent of "transgenderism" and "gender ideology," this seems to be the first time she has used AI-generated content to support her position.
Rowling has been fighting trans rights since 2020, when she formally made a statement about "sex and gender issues" in a 3,600-word essay published on her website. Rowling has been criticized repeatedly by former fans of the Harry Potter franchise for her statements in the years following, and several actors from the Harry Potter films have publicly stated their support for transgender people in opposition to Rowling.
The video Rowling posted initially appears to be a heavily filtered recording of an X exchange, but her screen quickly becomes filled with strange pages of garbled text. Her video shows a tweet from Dr. Helen Webberly, saying, "Have you noticed that the only argument they have is that if you have a willy, you must be a man. I wonder whether an absolute fear of willies is what drives them? Phallophobes need help, bless them, cos some people find willies wealy wealy scarwy."
The X interaction is abruptly interrupted by what appears to be a list of contacts and messages addressed to Rowling, although none of the text is legible. This page is then interrupted by another page swiping up on the screen with a message in indecipherable characters, possibly meant for Rowling. Throughout the six-second clip, loud typing noises and a low hum play in the background.
Many X users called her post 'AI garbage." One user said this interaction was "obviously not real," as others pointed out the characteristics of AI-generation in Rowling's video.
Rowling's detractors often joke about "black mold" affecting her political and social beliefs because of her profile picture on X, the background of which seems to resemble black mold. One user joked that the 'black mould growing up the walls of her house could be why "she's the way that she is."
Many X users were quick to comment on her strange post. These remarks included "how much mold do I need to understand this," and "JK Rowling's mold has gone so bad she's at the stage where she can successfully read sporian." Another user directly referenced Rowling's supposed "mold poisoning' in this quote tweet: "JK Rowling's profile picture revealing visible black mold that is apparently growing up her walls is probably the greatest Chekhov's gun of all time."
