Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse men's basketball standout Joe Girard III is poised to win a scoring title in his first year as a professional basketball player in the Lithuania Basketball League.
According to the EuroBasket website, Girard is averaging 20.9 points per game heading into the final game of a 36-game regular season with Nevesis.
Brandon Childress, a former Wake Forest guard, currently sits in second place averaging 19.6 points per game and also has one game remaining.
Given the distance between the two, Girard has all but clinched the title heading into the league's final two days of the regular-season on Tuesday and Wednesday.
While Girard has been productive, his team sits in ninth-place in the 10-team table with a record of 11-24. Girard's team will miss the eight-team playoff but will avoid relegation.
Girard played four seasons at Syracuse and ranks third on the program's all-time list for made 3-pointers, making 297 over the course of his career.
Only Gerry McNamara and Buddy Boeheim have made more. Girard also ranks second in career free-throw percentage.
After playing four seasons for the Orange, Girard transferred and played one season for Clemson.
Girard came to Syracuse after setting the record for career points scored by a high schooler in New York, scoring 4,763 while playing for Glens Falls.
